George Washington women’s soccer fans have learned early this year that they cannot give up on this resilient Colonials team. Once again, the Colonials put on an offensive display in the second half, and came away with a victory Monday as they held off the Cornell Big Red 3-2. That win improved them to a .500 record in the young season (2-2).

The Colonials fell down early 1-0, after Jayann Gabrio struck with a twisting free kick for the Big Red in the 38th minute, curling it past freshman keeper Nicole Fasano and into the back of the net. As the second half began, however, it was clear that the Colonials were gaining a grip on the game. Freshman Kristi Abbate made long runs into the final third during the first half, and her perseverance paid off as classmate Amanda Gaggioli was able to guide her fine cutback pass to equalize less than a minute into the second half.

Sophomore Alex Neal who scored the game winner against Columbia on Saturday, struck again today after a fine run down the center of the pitch, and a top-class strike into the top shelf of the net at the 60:17 mark to give the Colonials the lead. It didn’t last long however, as Clara Gallagher’s rebound tap-in following another Gabrio free kick found the net in the 76th minute.

The drama reached a climax as both teams searched for a decisive blow. It came with less than five minutes left in play as Meg Murphy found space near the top of the box and lashed the ball for an unassisted goal past Big Red keeper Tori Christ. Cornell’s last threat came in less than a minute later as Caroline Growney earned a breakaway opportunity, but was thwarted by an incredible save by Fasano.

It was a thrilling victory for the Colonials who scored more than two goals for the first time since they beat Robert Morris a year ago. The team will go on to play Towson in Annapolis, Maryland for the Navy invitational, but they will be back home on Tuesday, September 18th at 4pm. Coverage for that contest will start at 3:50.
